UNDER POCSO ACT, CITIZENS WHO NEGLECT TO REPORT CHILD ABUSE CASE CAN LIABLE FOR IMPRISONMENT UP TO SIX MONTHS, OR A FINE


The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act considered that all citizens mandatory reporters of child abuse. As such, if a citizen fails to report a known case of child abuse or neglect she or he is liable to punishment of imprisonment for up to six months, or a fine, or both. The public can call the child helpline on 1098 to report the incidents. National Crime Records Bureau data for 2016 reports 1,278 cases of women and child rape, but this is just a fraction of the incidents as most are never reported.

CENTRE LAUNCHED A WEB PORTAL FOR LODGING COMPLAINTS ON ONLINE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, SEXUAL ABUSE CASES


The Centre launched a portal 'cybercrime.gov.in' where citizens can file complaints about circulation of child pornography, sexually explicit materials and online sexual abuse, leading to automatic registration of FIR and action against the offenders. This will not only help the victims and complainants but also civil society organisations and responsible citizens to anonymously report complaints pertaining to child pornography, child sexual abuse material or sexually explicit material such as rape and gang rape. It will enable complainants to report cases without disclosing their identity.

DELHI POLICE BUSTED MULTI-CRORE JOB SCAM, SEVEN INCLUDING TWO GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ARRESTED


The Delhi Police busted a multi-crore PSU Recruitment Scam and arrested seven people including two government employees. Reports inform that the scam took place within Krishi Bhawan area in the national capital where scamsters cheated youths on the pretext of providing them government jobs in the state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). Police informed that seven men including the Class IV employees at the ministry have been arrested so far.

SEEKING SEXUAL FAVOURS PUNISHABLE UNDER NEW ANTI-CORRUPTION LAW

A senior government official said that Seeking and accepting sexual favours can be considered a bribe under the new anti-corruption law with the accused getting up to seven years jail term. The official said that under the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 investigating agencies like the CBI can now book officials for seeking and accepting sexual favours, expensive club memberships and hospitality or for providing employment to close friends or relatives among others.

SUPREME COURT APPROVED SCHEME THAT GRANTS MINIMUM RS 4 LAKH COMPENSATION TO RAPE SURVIVORS


The Supreme Court has ruled that a rape survivor will get a mandatory minimum compensation of Rs 4 lakh and, in case of gang rape Rs 5 lakh, and directed states to implement this from October 2 in accordance with a scheme framed by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in consultation with Centre. The monetary relief granted under the ‘compensation scheme for women victims/survivors of sexual assault and other crimes 2018’ is not linked with trial proceedings in such cases and the survivor can approach the state or district legal services authority for compensation immediately after registration of FIR.
